At one time referred to as "sauerkraut bend," the King William Historic District in San Antonio, Texas, is located south of downtown, and along the east bank of the San Antonio River. The district developed in the 1840s when German immigrants began settling in the area. This section of San Antonio was named after Kaiser Wilhelm of Prussia in the 1870s and was changed to King William during wartime.
It is now a vibrant, historical landmark--and a pleasure to visit. Several famous literary figures such as Sydney Lanier and Josephina Niggli have a history in the King William District. King William is considered the first suburb of San Antonio, but now the area is just steps away from the downtown area, and is home to stunning mansions. Many well-traveled visitors to San Antonio have commented that it is as compelling a place to visit as the Alamo. If you are planning a trip to explore the beautiful King William District, stay at the Alamo Street Victorian Inn Bed and Breakfast.
We are proud inhabitants of the King William District, and we have planned and participated in many of the neighborhood events. The district is filled with lovely Victorian-period mansions just steps away from the Riverwalk. Our glorious inn is a part of the peaceful scenery, and nearby King William Park offers a scenic place to picnic, complete with the old bandstand in the park's center.
Whether you want to gaze at the artwork at the San Antonio Art League Museum, or tour the Guenther House or Steves Mansion, King William holds plenty for guests to do and see. The nearby Blue Star Art Complex sports a micro brewery and brew pub, along with breathtaking galleries. Alamo Street is lined with great local restaurants, as well as quaint little shops selling historic antiques and handcrafted collectibles.
